W. A. HILL MEMORIAL TROPHY
Walter 'Bogey' Hill was a talented sportsman who played football and cricket at the senior level in Southern Tasmania.
Walter was a great supporter of the Club and after retiring from the game continued to attend club matches in all three grades of a Saturday afternoon, nearly always accompanied by his wife Bertha and at times other family members.
Bogey also had a concrete wicket in the back yard of his Mount Stuart home, and it was used by club members for pre-season practice.
For many years Walter opened up his property for a great social and fundraising exercise. This was always a popular and successful event and was supported by prominent cricket personalities from other TCA Clubs.
Walter (216) and Noel Johnston (212) were involved in a TCA record breaking partnership of 441 runs for second grade against North Hobart at the TCA Ground on the 9th December 1950.
Walter played 125 first grade games for New Town and captained the famous Cananore Football Club between the two World Wars.
After Walter's passing his family gave money to the Club to perpetuate his name. As Walter often attended third grade games and gained pleasure at seeing the youth of the Club do well it was decided to create an Award for the Most Improved Junior.
Mr Hill was awarded Life Membership in 1948.
